Acne is one of the most common forms of skin problem. It is an infection of the skin where the sebaceous gland under the skin gets infected due to the excess oil secretion and clogging by dust. Other factors like puberty excess secretion of androgen, hormonal problems, skin problems, bad eating habits, staying unclean are responsible for acne flare ups.
Small pimple like projections appears on the skin surface. These can be painful to touch. Some of the acnes don’t get infected such as black and white heads. The acnes that get infected need to be treated properly in order to avoid scaring of the skin.
Skin experts and several medical practitioners advise that before knowing about the treatment people should know how they get acne, how to avoid acne and keep the skin beautiful.
Here are some tips which can help you take care of pimple and avoid further flare ups.
- Rule of thumb of avoiding acne is to keep the face clean. Wash face two or three times with mild face wash or cleanser. Soaps contain hard detergent base and strong chemicals which are very harmful for the soft sensitive nature of skin.
- Do not touch your face. Consciously or unconsciously our hands come in contact with our face, largely due to habits like itching, resting face on palm while reading etc. Our hands are the carriers of millions of bacteria. This can be the primary reason of triggered acne infection. The less you touch your face skin, lesser are the chances of acne flare ups.
- Don’t ever touch, squeeze, pick or prick the acne. This will not only worsen the infection but also make a permanent scar on your face.
- If the acne is of mild to moderate degree, you can pick up any topical ointment or solution of salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide your local pharmacy. These medicinal chemicals along with sulfur and resorcinol results in elimination of whiteheads and blackheads. Application of these ointments ensures cells lined along the oil glands follicles are not shed.
- Tea tree oil is a time tested formula and has been popular as antibiotic dating back many years. Due to its drying effect, its application reduces the facial oil.
- Cleaning of skin alone is not sufficient. To avoid acne, you should let the skin breathe. For that, exfoliation is necessary. As a matter of fact, it is formed under the surface of the skin. When we wash the facial oil from surface it does not do much good to acne. You need to exfoliate the skin with scrubs so that dead cells are shed. Usually these dead cells clog the pore vents causing acne.
- Use oil free versions of cosmetics, be it foundation, sun screen or creams. Avoid getting hair gel products on your facial skin. They are oily resulting in yet more acne. When buy cosmetics, look for the tag of “noncomedogenic”. Cosmetic with this label would ensure that these products would not clog the pores.
If your acne is of severe level, you must visit a dermatologist. There are certain medicines which need prescription. Retin-A is a very common formula for acne. However, you can get this ointment over the counter too in your local pharmacy. One persistent problem of Retin A is its side effects. Skin often turns red, starts peeling and becomes extremely dry. If you suffer this problem, you should understand that the medicine is reacting to sunlight. Stop using Retin A immediately when outdoors. The use of a sun block lotion or some protection like a hat with flap can protect against the harmful results of sunlight. So, with proper care and a little awareness about cosmetics, you can make efforts of preventing and healing pimple without visiting the skin specialist.
