How To Keep Baby Skin Soft and Smooth
Baby Skin Care
When you touch your baby’s skin, we are sure you realize how soft and delicate it is. Hence, skin care for babies is altogether different from what adults do for themselves. Keeping this in mind, you must take ensure that your baby receives the proper skin care as misinformed steps may end up causing serious skin problems for the young guy. You don’t want that do you?
Baby Skin and the sun
An adult’s skin produces melanin which acts as a shield against sun burn when we go out into the open. However, a baby’s soft skin doesn’t do so and hence you must take special care to ensure that your toddler does not suffer from sun burns. While your doctor can advise you regarding the type of sunscreen to use, a little bit of standard sunscreen, especially for babies above 6 months, works fine. Additionally, ensure that your baby is wearing loose cotton clothes which cover the maximum amount of skin. Use a nice hat and a pair of shades to further ensure sun protection.
Bathing and massages
Since a baby seldom gets very dirty or grimy, in cooler climes, you can give your baby a bath about 2-3 times a week. However, if the climate is hot and humid, a bath everyday will make him feel cool as well. During bathing, ensure that you use very mild soap and shampoo, suitable for baby skin and hair. Do NOT use bubble baths are they are not suitable for infants and may cause a variety of infections. It is best to use natural products like calendula or arnica. However, some babies have been known to be sensitive to such herbal products. If you see your baby exhibiting symptoms of sensitivity, avoid such products henceforth.
Regularly massaging your baby with baby oil or a proper moisturizer helps keep the skin smooth and relieves skin irritation. Using herbal oils and lotions for such purposes is a good step. Vitamin enriched oils also help strengthen bones and muscles in your baby.
How to tackle rashes
Most babies at some point of time face the problem of rashes. In most cases, diaper rashes are the most prevalent. In order to ensure relief from rashes and the irritation that they cause, ensure proper hygiene and care for your baby. Bathe him in warm water. As diaper rashes tend to happen in the groin and buttock region, wipe these with a clean soft cloth carefully. A potential cause for rashes can be powders that contain talc. Hence, get a powder without talc and apply it on the rash affected areas.
The best cure for rash problems is a lot of fresh air. Hence, ensure that you do not keep your baby tightly wrapped up all the time. Allow fresh air to circulate through the rash affected areas by giving him loose clothing to wear. Avoid rash cures like petroleum jelly which effectively cut out air flow to the affected areas. With a proper baby powder and some fresh air, rashes will be far less prevalent.
What to remember in general
The most important thing to remember when handling baby skin is its sensitivity. Hence, whatever product you use, it must be mild and suitable enough. From soaps, shampoos to oils, moisturizers and powder, everything must be separately purchased for your toddler. Going natural is highly recommended if you baby is not sensitive to herbs. Most importantly, baby skin needs to breathe too. Keeping the baby cooped up inside poorly lit and ventilated rooms is not in the best interests of your young one.
