The scars from acne can seem like a double whammy. The scars are a result of pimples which have left a mark as a reminder.

There are different types of acne and it is important to know which type you are dealing with. Once you know what type of acne you are dealing with it will make the job of treating the scars effective.

Acne lesions or pimples happen when the hair follicles (or “pores”) on the skin become occlude with oil and dead skin cells. A occlude follicle is the perfect place for bacteria to grow and create the red bumps and pus-filled red bumps known as pimples.

Acne comes in different forms:
mild acne, which refers to the whiteheads or blackheads that most of us get at multitudinal times
moderately severe acne, which includes red inflamed pimples called papules and red pimples with white centers called pustules
severe acne, which causes nodules — painful, pus-filled cysts or lumps — to appear under the skin
Most serious scarring is caused by the more severe forms of acne, with nodules likely to leave permanent scars than other types of acne.
The best path is to get treatment for acne soon after it appears to prevent further serious acne and more scarring. If you have nodules, see your doctor or dermatologist for treatment.

Treating Acne Scars
Most of the time, those reddish or brownish acne marks that are left behind after a pimple eventually fade with no need for treatment. Picking or squeezing acne can increase the risk for scarring, though.
Acne scars take two forms:
1. scars with a gradual dip or depression (sometimes called “rolling” scars)
2. scars that are deep and narrow
A person’s acne needs to be under control before scars can be treated.
Mild vs. Severe Scarring
Treatments depend on how severe the scars are. In some cases, a doctor or dermatologist may suggest a chemical peel or microdermabrasion to help improve the appearance of scarred areas. These milder treatments can be done right in the office.
If you have serious scarring from previous bouts with acne, there are several things you can do:
Laser resurfacing. This procedure can be done in the doctor’s or dermatologist’s office. The laser removes the damaged top layer of skin and tightens the middle layer, leaving skin smoother. It can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. The doctor will try to lessen any pain by first numbing the skin with local anesthesia. It usually takes between 3 and 10 days for the skin to heal completely.
Dermabrasion. This treatment uses a rotating wire brush or spinning diamond instrument to wear down the surface of the skin. As the skin heals, a new, smoother layer replaces the abraded skin. It may take a bit longer for skin to heal using dermabrasion — usually between 10 days and 3 weeks.
Fractional laser therapy. This type of treatment works at a deeper level than laser resurfacing or dermabrasion, Because fractional laser therapy doesn’t wound the top layer of tissue, healing time is shorter. Someone who has had this type of treatment may just look a bit sunburned for a couple of days.
For “rolling” scars, doctors sometimes inject material under the scar to raise it to the level of normal skin. Finally, in some cases, a doctor may recommend surgery to remove deeply indented scars.
One thing you shouldn’t do to deal with acne scars is load up your face with masks or fancy lotions — these won’t help and may irritate your skin further, making the scars red and even more noticeable.
If you have a red or brownish mark on your face that you got from a bad zit, it should eventually fade, just like the scars on your knees from falling off your bike as a kid. However, it may take 12 months or longer. So your best bet is to avoid these kinds of marks by not squeezing or popping zits.

The statistics is that more then half of adults never examine their skin, but checking once in awhile can be lifesaving. Each month look for any changes growths or rough skin. Other skin signs are waxy looking patches and sores or scabs. If you find any crusting or oozing bleeding and have not healed with in about a week or two then pay attention to these conditions.

The importance of being aware can prevent many forms of skin conditions. You can treat most type of conditions if detected early, remember this and you will prevent from further development if there is a skin problem.

Spending too much time in the sun can be damaging to your skin. Even the simple act of tanning over gradual period can damage skin, just as if you had been sunburned. It is true that using sun tan lotion can protect you against sunburn, but the lotion will not protect you from the sun’s radiation.

The exposure to ultraviolet UV rays is cumulative. Thus, the sun that you’re exposed to as a child can affect you as an adult. The damage to skin from UV radiation can cause wrinkles and leathering. There are different types of UV rays such as UVA which can penetrate the skin more deeply. With UVB might not cause an immediate burn, but it may be a crucial element to devloping melanoma the most deadly of skin cancer. When you are out in the sun be cautious of the damage the UV rays can place on your skin. It is important to know that UV rays can damage in different amounts based on race and ethnicity. Your complexion is also a factor to the damage UV rays might have on skin. Keep in mind that a suntan is sign that your skin has been damaged by the sun. This happens because the skin‘s inner layer is penetrated. This causes the skin to produce more melanin pigments. It is true that a tan can protect against sunburn, but it does not protect against any other skin damage.

There are treatments for various forms of skin cancer. There are standard treatments for patients with nonmelanoma skin cancer and actinic keratosis. There are some new developments in treatment which are still in tests, but also look promising for future treatment. The use of surgery is used for treatment nonmelanoma skin cancer or actinic keratosis. This type of surgery is used to remove as little skin tissue as possible to remove skin cancer on the face. This type of surgery is done in layers until skin cancer is removed from the area. The use of radiation can kill cancer cells at high levels of radiation. The use of radiation treatment has become one of the most used treatments in killing cancer cells.
There are a few other popular treatment methods such as chemotherapy and biologic therapy. These methods have also seen great results and are used based on the level of cancer detected.
All these treatments will be discussed with your Dermatologist and the best method will be recommended.

How to prevent skin cancer

The most widespread form of cancer is skin cancer and almost 50% of the reported cases of cancer fall in this category. Skin cancer is characterized by the growth of malignant growth in the skin. Recent statistics indicate that in the United States a large number of people have been diagnosed with melanoma and non melanoma cancer. Skin cancer is mainly caused due to excessive exposure to the harmful ultraviolet or UV rays of the sun. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to guard your sensitive skin and thereby protecting it from the sun. Though most of the cases of skin cancer are reported after a certain age but the damaging effect on the skin begins quite early in life.

The UV radiation is the chief cause behind skin cancer. There are three different kinds of ultraviolet radiation and these include UVA, UVB and UVC. Of these the UVC are absorbed by the atmosphere of the Earth and thus does not reach us. UVA and UVB have wavelengths of 320 to 400 nm and 280 to 320 nm respectively and when they come into contact with our skin, they react with a substance called melanin that is present in human skin. While UVA rays are responsible for premature ageing, appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, UVB exposes us to the graver danger of skin cancer. UVA further aggravates the effects of UVB.

Prolonged exposure to the harmful ultraviolet rays can lead to skin cancer. There are three main types of skin cancer and these include basal cell skin cancer, squamous cell skin cancer and malignant melanoma. These are named after the skin cells which they affect.

Basal cell cancer is also known as non-melanoma skin cancer. It can be identified by the appearance of a small growth of flesh on the hands, head or neck area. This form of cancer can be identified easily and therefore the chances of a complete cure are high. People who have a lighter complexion are more prone to acquire this form of cancer.

Squamous cell cancer is also a non melanoma cancer and is characterized by the appearance of red patches on skin or in the form of small nodules.

Malignant melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer. It is alternatively known as cutaneous melanoma. It is rarely found in children. In melanoma, the cancer cells affect the skin pigment called melanin, one that is responsible for the color of our skins. Melanoma can appear in the form of a mole that changes in its size and color and at times you can find it bleeding or itching.

Following a few small steps on a regular basis can minimize the threat of skin cancer. Your first priority should be to avoid exposure to the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun as much as possible. For that you need to wear protective clothing and even a hat that would guard your eyes and head against the rays. You should apply sunscreen to those areas of the body which remained uncovered, like your hands and feet. Choose a sunscreen that has a SPF count of more than 15 and it should be applied regularly, even on a cloudy day. If possible, do not venture out during the midday, in the hours between 10 am to 3 pm.

You should also try and avoid the radiation from the tanning parlors or sunlamps. These not only harm your skin but also increase the chances of cancer. You need to take special care of your kids as well and do not allow them to play outside in the sun during the noon and afternoon. Just follow these few points and you can save yourself and your family from skin cancer.

General skin care – What needs to be done to keep skin healthy and beautiful.

Skin is the most exposed part of our body and it demands special care around the year. Skin care is basically of two types, one is general skin care and second one is special skin care. While general skin care includes daily cleansing, exfoliation, toning, and moisturizing of skin, special skin care includes skin treatment as per the skin type and discrepancy in skin tone.

Special skin care includes application of face pack, skin treatment facial, Botox, treatment, ozone treatment etc. Normally special skin care is done in salons and beauty parlors under special care of beauty experts.

On the other hand, general skin care is the everyday skin care routine and it is to be done on regular individualistic manner. There are many skin care products available off the shelves. You should purchase these products depending on your skin type and of course your budget. However, it is wise to use organic and herbal based products because chemical based skin care products tend to prove harmful in the long run ultimate effect.

Alternatively, there are some home-based product recipes for general skin care which can be easily made at home. These natural products are not only effective in their impact but are pocket friendly as well for the user.

Cleansing is the initial part of general skin care routine. It is an important part of skin care process because it is the initial foundation of skin pampering. Cleansing should be done by soap-free herbal cleanser and depending on the skin type one has to select the cleaner for optimum effect. Cleanser cleans the dirt and oils accumulated on the skin surface. Deep cleansing lotions or gels are the effective methods for the intensive cleansing process because these products clean at the deep level of skin pores and keep all the pores open.

Next to skin cleansing comes the step of exfoliation process in general skin care. This is the process for removal of dead cell layers from the skin surface. Exfoliation process not only removes dead skin cell layers, but also helps to rejuvenate new cell generating process and reveals fresh and blemish-free skin tone. Exfoliation is a sound way to prevent wrinkles and age spots thus it is to be done, if not regularly, 2-3 times in a week with gentle exfoliating cum scrubbing lotions.

In general skin care schedule, the process of toning is done to tone the skin as well as to close the open pores. Toning can be done by market available toners. Otherwise water, melon juice, orange juice, or cucumber juice on skin works as good natural skin toner.

When the toning process is over, now it is time for skin moisturizing phase. Generally, application of intensive moisturizer can beat the induced dryness of skin, and depending on the skin type the use of moisturizer should be carried on around the year. For example, those who are more exposed to air conditioning impact should use heavy moisturizer around the year to prevent dryness of skin tone. When we use moisturizer, we take care of the outer layer of our skin.

However taking care for outer skin surface does not promote a viable solution for healthy skin from inside. Adequate consumption of water and diluted fruit juice keeps the body cells hydrated. Consumption of water initiates better flushing out of body toxins and promote a beautiful, flawless, and soft skin tone.

Balance diet, regular exercise, stress free life and regular 8-hour sleep are the supportive processes to promote general skin care effect. However it is wise to use sun block cream at the time of outdoor activities.

Consumption of lemon juice and honey in the morning in empty stomach helps to maintain a flawless skin tone. It is one of the best natural diet remedies for healthy and beautiful skin around the year.

Dry Skin: Causes, Consequences and Care

Dry skin can really be an irritating problem that may bother you throughout your life. Do not worry as there are millions like you, across the globe, who suffer from this never ending skin problem. The problem with dry skin is that it lacks the necessary moisture that is required to keep the skin soft and supple. As a result it tends to become flaky and itchy. Dry skin lacks in sebum and that is what makes it highly sensitive. You can easily determine a dry skin by its appearance. As soon as it is washed with water and a cleansing agent, it gives the feeling of being stretchy, till the time it is massaged with a moisturizer or a cream. You can identify a dry skin by its cracked and chapped exterior.

Skin can become dry due to a number of reasons, especially when it is exposed to extreme weather conditions like chilly winds and heat and often due to continuous exposure of the skin to air conditioners. The main reason due to which the skin becomes dry is the fact that the oil glands produce a lesser quantity of sebum that is required to lubricate the skin. This is the reason why the skin becomes devoid of moisture. It is not that dry skin occurs only as a result of external factors. At times the condition is genetic or hereditary. A deficiency in some of the important nutrients like Vitamin A and Vitamin B can result in the dryness of skin.

Often people who have just recovered from dermatological problems like seborrhea, dermatitis, psoriasis and eczema complain of a dry skin. If you are into too much of make up and use of cosmetics, your skin tends to become dry after a certain period of time. If you use a soap that is harsh, then it will eat away the moisture of your skin after wash.

You may not realize, but often a dry skin is indicative of an underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism. It may lead to a number of problems, especially for those who have been diagnosed with diabetes. Some of the medication that you take like antihistamines, diuretics and antispasmodics also contribute to the dryness of the skin.

Dry skin manifests itself in a number of ways. People with dry skin exhibit early signs of ageing as wrinkles and fine lines make themselves visible quite early. So if you witness the tendencies of dry skin, it is a sign that you need to take adequate and proper care of your skin from an early age.

Since water tends to dry the skin, it does not mean that cleansing is not necessary for dry skin. On the contrary, it requires a lot of cleansing. Instead of using regular or warm water, you can make use of mineral water to clean your skin. Use a face wash or a mild cleansing solution to clean your face instead of soaps. Soaps have a high PH and alkaline content which does not serve the cause of a dry skin. However, do not make use of a rough cloth to wipe your face. Next, you need to massage your skin well with a moisturizer or cream.

To aid the cause of a good skin, you should work not only the outside but also on the inside. For that you need to eat right. Increase quantity of fresh fruits and vegetables in your day to day diet. These supply the vitamins naturally to your system.

Take sufficient care of your skin and you will gradually discover that your dry skin ceases to be less problematic than it was ever before.

Baby Skin Care

When you touch your baby’s skin, we are sure you realize how soft and delicate it is. Hence, skin care for babies is altogether different from what adults do for themselves. Keeping this in mind, you must take ensure that your baby receives the proper skin care as misinformed steps may end up causing serious skin problems for the young guy. You don’t want that do you?

Baby Skin and the sun

An adult’s skin produces melanin which acts as a shield against sun burn when we go out into the open. However, a baby’s soft skin doesn’t do so and hence you must take special care to ensure that your toddler does not suffer from sun burns. While your doctor can advise you regarding the type of sunscreen to use, a little bit of standard sunscreen, especially for babies above 6 months, works fine. Additionally, ensure that your baby is wearing loose cotton clothes which cover the maximum amount of skin. Use a nice hat and a pair of shades to further ensure sun protection.

Bathing and massages

Since a baby seldom gets very dirty or grimy, in cooler climes, you can give your baby a bath about 2-3 times a week. However, if the climate is hot and humid, a bath everyday will make him feel cool as well. During bathing, ensure that you use very mild soap and shampoo, suitable for baby skin and hair. Do NOT use bubble baths are they are not suitable for infants and may cause a variety of infections. It is best to use natural products like calendula or arnica. However, some babies have been known to be sensitive to such herbal products. If you see your baby exhibiting symptoms of sensitivity, avoid such products henceforth.

Regularly massaging your baby with baby oil or a proper moisturizer helps keep the skin smooth and relieves skin irritation. Using herbal oils and lotions for such purposes is a good step. Vitamin enriched oils also help strengthen bones and muscles in your baby.

How to tackle rashes

Most babies at some point of time face the problem of rashes. In most cases, diaper rashes are the most prevalent. In order to ensure relief from rashes and the irritation that they cause, ensure proper hygiene and care for your baby. Bathe him in warm water. As diaper rashes tend to happen in the groin and buttock region, wipe these with a clean soft cloth carefully. A potential cause for rashes can be powders that contain talc. Hence, get a powder without talc and apply it on the rash affected areas.

The best cure for rash problems is a lot of fresh air. Hence, ensure that you do not keep your baby tightly wrapped up all the time. Allow fresh air to circulate through the rash affected areas by giving him loose clothing to wear. Avoid rash cures like petroleum jelly which effectively cut out air flow to the affected areas. With a proper baby powder and some fresh air, rashes will be far less prevalent.

What to remember in general

The most important thing to remember when handling baby skin is its sensitivity. Hence, whatever product you use, it must be mild and suitable enough. From soaps, shampoos to oils, moisturizers and powder, everything must be separately purchased for your toddler. Going natural is highly recommended if you baby is not sensitive to herbs. Most importantly, baby skin needs to breathe too. Keeping the baby cooped up inside poorly lit and ventilated rooms is not in the best interests of your young one.

Sun care – An indispensable practice

Living in a tropical country is not easy where the Sun is more visible and the days last longer. With the pollution spawning more complex environmental hazards, the sun rays are not filtered through the atmosphere as they once were. Hence the harmful UV rays directly touch our skin. Hence it is very necessary to take sun care.

Sun care does not only involve usage of skin protecting crème. The user has to keep in mind the crème should carry certain properties. It should have proper PH balance and should also have an added property of SPF 15 and above. Our body produces melanin which helps us to protect our skin against the sun. The SPF balance in the sun screen crèmes helps us to retain the balance of melanin.

There are several sun screen lotions available in the market. But one should not just pick any sunscreen lotion for sun care. Sun care requires adequate knowledge before it can be practiced. The user should take in to consideration his or her skin type and also the kind of environment in which he or she is residing. If the heat is exceedingly high, the person should use a sunscreen with a higher SPF and if the living destination is too cold , a lower SPF sun screen is fine. But one should keep in mind that it is harmful to go out in any kind of weather condition without sunscreen.

Sun Care involves several other steps. In case a person has been affected by the sun’s harmful UV rays and gets a sun burn, he or she should immediately rub ice and apply an anti burn lotion . As an alternative, one can also use carrot juice along with cucumber juice and lemon juice together and apply at the affected area. UV rays with its harmful properties often cause several skin problems, at times leading to fatal conditions. Hence an early sun care is absolutely necessary.

Sun care also involves the practice of ideal diet. A light and water based diet can also help in protection from the sun. The sun with its harmful rays sucks up all the water content from one’s body thus leaving the person dehydrated. Intake of water in a regular basis can help the [person to recover quickly from any kind of heat related problems. An ideal sun care routine involves several steps. Following is the summary of the steps which should be involved in order to keep oneself protected form the sun.

Drink lots of water in order to keep the body hydrated always. If possible carry water.

Use a sunscreen with SPF reading 15 and above depending upon the atmospheric condition of a particular area.

Eat light diet and increase water content in diet as a part of sun care routine.

In case of sun burns, the person can rush to the doctor or can apply a solution of lemon juice, cucumber juice, carrot juice and sandalwood powder.

It is not ideal to drink water just after coming from the heat. The person should take some rest and then take water.

6. Wear light colored and light weighted clothes in order to avoid suffocation.

It not that difficult to keep oneself protected from the sun. All one has to do is to maintain the above mentioned points and abide by it as long as possible. And if possible one should contribute in reducing the environmental pollution which is adding up to the increasing intrusion of the run days directly in to the Earth’s atmosphere. Hence one should take care of himself as well as the environment as a part of sun care.

One of the most common skin disorders is the eruption of skin rashes which, whether malignant or harmless, are most certainly uncomfortable, and often painful. Marked by red eruption in either localized areas, or all over the skin leading to a change in the general color and texture of the skin, rashes may cause the skin to itch, become dry, scaled or bumpy, or even swell and blister.

A rash does not always signify any particular health problem. There are numerous types of skin rashes, and also a wide variety of conditions and situations that can lead to them. Certain cases are more severe than others, while some may be nothing more than a minor disturbance.

However more often than not, skin rashes are symptoms – manifestations of deeper disorders, rather than being diseases themselves. The causes, and therefore treatments for rashes, vary widely. Diagnosis thus depends upon the appearance of the rash, other symptoms accompanying it, environments to which the patient may have been exposed to, occupation, and occurrence in other members of the family.

Doctors have attributed anxiety, allergic reactions, irritants, bacterial or fungal infections, diseases like eczema or acne, and exposure to sun or heat as some of the most common causes of skin rashes. The itching that arises from the eruption often causes the patient to scratch the affected skin, doing which invariably increases the spread of the rash. A multitude of over-the-counter remedies like ointments or gels provide temporary relief to the symptoms, but for proper elimination of the underlying causes of skin rashes, a doctor or dermatologist must be consulted.

Rashes are definitely uncomfortable, and most of the times a nuisance, but are seldom dangerous. Life-threatening skin rashes rarely occur. However when they do, a prompt appointment with a doctor is a must. It is therefore extremely important to identify rashes, and know when to suspect malignancy.

Pemphigus Vulgaris (PV), Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN), Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), and Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome (SSS) are five potentially life-threatening disorders that have skin rash as the primary symptom. One common feature of all of these diseases is the fact that the rash affects the entire body, or most of it.

Not just the skin, in malignant rashes, look for affected areas in the mucous membranes (the moist linings of the mouth, nose, and eyes). In such cases, skin rashes often have blisters on top of them. Blisters that accompany a serious rash usually have features like swelling of the thin outer layer of the skin affecting large parts of the body. This may mean several small blisters about 1 cm across or a few very large blisters several centimeters wide. Blisters are tense (full of fluid) at first, and then may become loose before breaking open. When they do rupture, the skin underneath is moist and usually painful. The underlying skin surface then dries up and crusts over.

Pressing on a tense blister or scratching the skin next to a blister in case of such malignant skin rashes will extend the blister and make it larger. Such blisters can involve any or all of the mucous membranes. Blisters in these areas may not be noticeable because they rupture easily, especially in the mouth, but this symptom is usually accompanied by a burning sensation, especially while taking food. Blisters on the mucous membranes that rupture may be very painful.

Staying on the alert for alarming symptoms, and taking immediate counteractive steps often provide instant relief to skin rashes. If the symptoms do not change within 24 hours of taking remedial measures, it is usually advisable to contact a doctor or a dermatologist.
